Ok, ok I know, a slightly sensationalist headline – but behind the headline lies a truth.
Nearly a quarter of the world’s websites are built using WordPress CMS (WP) – we build all our sites with it – it’s brilliant. But did you know that WP sites are attacked 24% more often than other content management systems combined (Source: The Imperva Web Application Attack Report – WAAR).

Let’s not get too carried away though, there isn’t a need to be alarmed, you just need to know what to do to prevent an attack from happening, and keep your WordPress site safe.
The biggest mistake is using a generic username for your WP logins such as ‘admin’. Along with this a weak password – yes, you know the one – your pet’s name and the year you were born, we have all done it. Another major issue is failing to update your core files, themes and plug-ins. New versions of these shouldn’t be left ignored – the updates are there for a reason.
Ok, so how do we keep on top of this and keep your site safe and sound. The quickest way to secure your site is to add a security plug-in, of which there a quite a few. The one we like to use is Wordfence. It is simple to use and can guide through some easy steps to secure your site with a couple of clicks.
Another way to do this is to have your developer keep an eye on your site so you can have peace of mind and confidence in your website. Confidence is a great thing, it propels you forward and helps you focus on what needs to be done. On the other hand, doubt, can fester in your mind and keep you off track. So having someone looking after your WP site is a great way to protect it.
Meta Creative offer a ‘Web Assist’ package for WP sites that is an easy monthly subscription that covers your site in the following areas:
- Core, theme and plug-in updates
- Backups
- Wordfence security activation and monitoring
WordPress is great, we all love it, and we have to protect the things we love. If you want more info on this topic you can contact us here.
