What the AI Shift Means for SEO in 2025 and Beyond

In 2025, we’re witnessing one of the biggest shake-ups in digital behaviour since the rise of mobile-first indexing. With the rise of AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other conversational search platforms, the way people discover and consume information is fundamentally changing.

This shift is most visible in recent figures: Safari search traffic — historically a stronghold for Google — has started to decline for the first time in years. Users are turning to AI assistants not just for answers, but for context, summarisation, and intelligent suggestions. Google remains dominant, but for how long?

As an SEO team, we don’t see this as the end of search. We see it as the start of something new.

The rise of Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) — crafting content that answers specific questions clearly and authoritatively — is a natural evolution of the discipline. AI tools are hungry for structured, meaningful, well-referenced content. The fundamentals of SEO still apply: clear language, good structure, trustworthy sources. It’s just the way content is surfaced that’s shifting.

What does this mean for the next 12 months?

  • Content strategies will need to be more precise and user-centric than ever. Think less about ranking on page one, and more about being the best answer.
  • Technical SEO still matters. AI tools prefer fast, accessible, well-organised sites — just like traditional search engines.
  • Smaller brands have a bigger opportunity. With AI responses pulling from a broader range of sources, there’s a genuine chance to cut through with high-quality, niche content.

We remain optimistic. People still need answers. They still want help, guidance, products, and services. Whether that help comes through Google, ChatGPT, or whatever comes next, the role of SEO — in some form — will continue to be crucial.

The way people search is changing. But the need to be found hasn’t gone anywhere.
